چکیده

In this paper we provide a theoretical contribution to the area of experience design in the field of human-agent interaction. Our research focuses on the question which (emotional) processes lead to people’s behavior of seeking or avoiding interaction with interface agents. A main startingpoint for this research is the model for Perceiving and Experiencing Fictional Characters (PEFiC). It explains the (dis)liking of fictional characters in television and in other media. We think this empirically tested model provides an opportunity to investigate user experiences in human-agent interaction in a systematic way. As the PEFiC model concerns unidirectional interaction in the media domain, we will include other factors that are relevant in bidirectional interaction in the agent domain to create the Interactive PEFiC model. In this paper we attempt to identify such factors. In addition, we describe a set of experiments we are planning to conduct. One of the strengths of our approach to the study of user experiences with interface agents, is that we focus on relevant features of the agent within its particular context, and also, more importantly, on the cognitive and affective processes of users while interacting with empathic agents.

Empathic Lead Users: the Effects of Extraordinary User Experiences on Customer Needs Analysis and Product Redesign

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of empathic lead user analysis for uncovering latent customer needs that could lead to breakthrough product ideas. Empathic lead users are defined as ordinary customers (or designers) who are transformed into lead users by experiencing the product in radically new ways, via extraordinary user experiences. These extraordinary experienc...

Do underlying attitudes affect users' subjective experiences?: the case of an empathic agent

In this paper, we present evidence that underlying attitudes, i.e., preconceived ideas about applications or domains, affect users’ experience of social support by an empathic virtual buddy that provides emotional support and practical advice to victims of cyberbullying. This effect might be a (partial) explanation for the inconclusive and contradictory results reported for the impact of emotio...

Am I bovvered?: Fifteen years of Empathic Agents

In 2001, the EU-funded project VICTEC pioneered the concept of an Empathic Agent. This was reported at AAMAS in 2004 in a well-cited paper ‘Caring for Agents and Agents that Care: Building Empathic Relations with Synthetic Agents’ (Paiva, Dias, Sobral, Aylett, Sobreperez, Woods, Zoll, Hall). It advanced two goals for embodied empathic agents: characters that, by their actions and behaviours, ar...

A Study in Users' Physiological Response to an Empathic Interface Agent

This paper presents a novel method for evaluating the impact of animated interface agents with affective and empathic behavior. While previous studies relied on questionnaires in order to assess the user’s overall experience with the interface agent, we will analyze users’ physiological response (skin conductance and electromyography), which allows us to estimate affect-related user experiences...

Emotionally Responsive Virtual Counselor for Behavior-Change Health Interventions

In this paper, we discuss a novel approach to design an emotionally responsive system in the context of virtual health interventions for behavior change. We describe the system’s design with a focus on enabling a multimodal Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA) to deliver the interventions empathetically. This is done by adapting its verbal and non-verbal behavior, in real-time, to those of the c...
